With a history dating back nearly 4,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia, it's fair to say the human race really enjoys a good beer.
To celebrate this year's Science Week, an event called The Science Of Beer will take place at Ruin Bar on November 16 where local beer aficionados will learn everything they could ever wish to know about the nectar of the gods.
An expert brewer from craft brewery Rascals (who like to make funky beers like the Strawberry Milkshake IPA) will be your host for the evening and they'll be explaining things like how beer is made from four key ingredients, the difference between lager and ale, what makes the different styles of lager (like pilsner versus Vienna lager) and what makes the different styles of ale (stout, red ale, pale ale, IPA, wheat beer and sour).
The whole ethos of the event is StopAndAsk, which is the theme of all Science Week events such as The Science Of Taste, where the public is being invited to embrace their curiosity and make discoveries about topics that they've always wondered about.
Of course you can't have a event about beer, in a bar known for its variety of brews, without sampling the drinks in question, so you can expect to taste a selection of lager, stout, ale and vanilla IPA.
And if your curiosity isn't sated by these lessons, you're encouraged to pose any question that enters your mind about the brewing process.
