The weather is starting to turn cold and rainy (winter is definitely coming), and we've used it as the perfect excuse to indulge in dreamy mugs of rich hot chocolate.
We've put together a list of the top 10 hot chocolates in the city, so you can indulge in the best that Dublin has to offer.
Warning: these are not for the faint-hearted!
Fallon & Bryne never disappoints with their food offerings; we're huge fans of their deli and restaurant. A happy discovery has been their hot chocolate made with high quality Valrhona chocolate. This is just the thing to cheer you up on a cold or rainy day.
The Pepper Pot is one of our favourite cafés in Dublin, not only because of their delicious, wholesome food, but also because of their fantastic location in the Powerscourt Centre. Their hot chocolate is made with rich German chocolate and is the perfect thing to enjoy after their famous, mouth-watering roasted pear and bacon sandwich.
It should comes as no surprise that a chocolatier would be responsible for making some of the best hot chocolates in the city. This thick, rich hot chocolate ticks all the boxes. Head on down to their store on Drury Street to get your fix, and pick up a few macaroons to go with it while you're at it!
This is one of my favourite places in the city to meet someone for tea or coffee. The vibe of the place is so relaxed, the staff are friendly and all of the drinks and cakes are delicious.
Thankfully, as well as the top quality coffees and teas that they are renowned for, they also have hot chocolate on the menu to satisfy your sweet tooth. Swirl a block of handmade chocolate into a cup of frothy milk, take a seat at the window seats and gaze out at South William Street and watch the world go by.
When you think of Murphy's ice cream parlour, the last thing you probably think of is hot chocolate. But among chocolate aficionados Murphy's is known for having some of the best hot chocolates in the city.
If you want something more exciting than their pure melted Belgian chocolate, then you can try their Aztec Hot Chocolate which is spiced with chilli and cardamon or their Cacao del Tinco which comes with orange zest, cinnamon and almond. Go order a cup in their Wicklow Street shop and see what all the fuss is about.
Not only are the hot chocolates in the InterContinental, Ballsbridge utterly delicious, the setting is completely luxurious too. Indulge in an extravagant hot chocolate with sides of chocolate pieces, marshmallows and cream for you to stir in as you please, while you people watch all the glamorous guests of the hotel pass in and out.
Any chocoholic worth their salt will be well familiar with the delicious hot chocolates that Butler's café put together. You have loads of choice here whether you want a white, milk or dark hot chocolate, you can even order your hot chocolate with a chilli, mint or coconut twist!
You also get a little chocolate of your choice with your order. Thankfully they have loads of locations around the city, you can even get your fix in Dublin airport… The only way to cheer yourself up as your board a red eye!
This is definitely the fanciest of the bunch, the Bean and Goose handmade chocolate is melted down with your choice of spices. This rich and deep hot chocolate is my favourite, it only misses the top spot because it's only available on Saturdays from the Temple Bar farmer's market to take away.
If you're a chocolate connoisseur, you will really need to try this out.
Brother Hubbard on Capel Street (and also their sister café, Sister Sadie on Harrington Street) is well known for their hot chocolate. Their OTT creation is not for the faint-hearted; you receive a jug of piping hot chocolate which you pour into of a cup of thick and rich chocolate ganache.
Definitely worth the potential heart attack!
Accents is a total gem hidden away on Stephen Street Lower. Your hot chocolate comes with a side of chocolate pieces and marshmallows that you stir in yourself, making it as sweet and chocolatey as you like.
The DIY novelty of this hot chocolate isn't the only reason why Accents is in the top spot, the café itself is a cosy little haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. You can sink into one of their comfy leather couches with a book and sip away on your hot chocolate assured that you won't be disturbed.
