Anthony Lynam from Kilmainham, Dublin never sat a major exam after leaving school at 14 in 1955.
He told The Irish Times that, “It was before free education. Most left after primary school. I was unusual in staying on for an extra two years. We had to pay two guineas.”
The retired piano technician heard about evening Leaving Cert courses and decided to take on higher-level English.
He received his results on Tuesday with the rest of the Leaving Cert students and was very happy with his results.
He is one of the oldest students ever to sit the exams and said, “I was very anxious but I am very happy with how I did. It has been a bit of a journey and a real learning curve but I would do it all again.’’
