The Commuter’s Guide: Here’s Everything You Need To Know About The Mornington And Bettystown Area, Co Meath

Stretched across 1,223 acres of Meath's stunning Gold Coast, you'll find Mornington.

Bordered by the the River Boyne and the Irish Sea, the coastal town first formed as a fishing community (its Irish name Baile Uí Mhornáin means 'Town Of The Mariner'), but it's becoming increasingly popular with folks working in Dublin looking for a more peaceful lifestyle.

Mornington extends along the seashore to the nearby village of Bettystown and, at this remove from Dublin, it's easier to maintain a work-life balance, something which is increasingly more difficult in high-pressure work environments.

Whether by bus, rail or car, Mornington is more easily accessible than you might think.

By car, it's only a 30-minute drive from Swords and 10-minute drive from Drogheda. If you're travelling by train or bus, the journey to Dublin's city centre takes just over an hour to complete.

The area's most notable sights are the 60ft-high Maiden Tower and the solid round tower named Lady's Finger, which both aid the navigation of ships travelling along the River Boyne.

Golf enthusiasts will love the challenging Laytown & Bettystown Golf Club, which has been been a big part of the community for more than 100 years.

Of course, Mornington Strand is also popular among locals for fishing, swimming and long leisurely walks. Schools

If you're a parent, or you're planning on being one, you'll be glad to learn that there's no shortage of educational facilities in the surrounding area.

In primary you have the all girls school of Realt Na Mara and the all boy school of Bunscoil Buachalli, both situated on the same campus. There's also the mixed school of Gaelscoil An Bhradain and the educate together primary Le Cheille.

When it comes to secondary schools, you've got Colaiste Na Hinse, a local mixed community school, and the mixed Grammar School in Drogheda. Nearby girls secondary schools include The Sacred Heart, Drogheda and The Loreto, Balbriggan. There's also the all boys school of St Marys, Drogheda.

Eating & Drinking

For the foodies among you, you can plan an entire day around eating and drinking around the area.

You can start off in Relish in Bettystown, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner (their early bird menu is unreal) with a lovely view of the sea. If you're in the mood for brunch, try Cool Beanz for crepes, waffles of the sweet or savoury variety and ice cream. For dinner, pop into Reddan's Of Bettystown to enjoy sumptuous dishes like Reddan's Bruschetta (parma ham wrapped brie on toasted homemade bread with a mix of salad and sundried tomato pesto), A Taste Of Ireland (four-hours braised beef rib on colcannon mash served with Dublin Bay prawn and Guinness braising liquids), Bettystown Lamb Shank (three-hours braised lamb shank with glazed carrots and onions, rich lamb jus and creamy mash) and many more.

When evening rolls round you can settle down at Moran's Pub, a traditional establishment dating all the way back to the 1840s which has been renovated and expanded in recent times to offer a few modern comforts. With its wood-panelling and open fires, there's a homey feeling to this local, with the whole place coming to life when trad music is played, there's a match on the TV or the regulars are trying to rope you into a game of Rings.
