A new market at, er, Newmarket, The Green Door has fantastic organic fruit and vegetables from suppliers, including Christy Stapleton in Wicklow, who sells fantastic wheatgrass. It ’s not very cheap but it is absolute top quality, and its range is expanding all the time.
As well as the fruit and veg, they do a limited supply of fish, seafood and meat (from Coolanowle Organic Meat and John Fitzsimmons Fishmonger), as well as fabulous pestos, oils, preserves, druid fruits and cereals etc.
There’s even now a handful of takeaway food stalls including coffee, thai and crepes. Unfortunately at the moment it ’s only open Thursday/Friday (12 – 7pm) and Saturday (9.30am – 4pm).
This is the closest thing you’re likely to find to an artisan butchers in Dublin, The Village Butcher in Ranelagh is serious about their meat. Find the perfect cut of farm-fresh meat, or pick up some dry aged beef, and have a chat with owner David Nolan recipes or the best way to cook it.
Plus the walls are lined with other essential grocery items as well as preserves and sauces, making it a one-stop shop.
What would a discussion of fresh produce in Dublin be without a mention of Moore Street?
Cheap (especially if you ’re willing to chance your arm and haggle) and cheerful, you might not find very much that ’s exotic, but you’ll definitely find your staples here. And if you pop into the small Asian and African shops that line the streets behind the vendors, you might find some hidden culinary gems too.
FX Buckley won the top spot last year in our list of the Best Butchers in Dublin, and no wonder with a range like theirs. This should be your go-to spot for finding those tricky cuts of meat that are difficult to find, like oxtail or offal.
But don ’t overlook it for the standards either: they of course also stock high-quality lean mince, meaty chickens and chunky red steaks, which also stock their restaurants and steakhouses like The Bull and Castle.
Like many butchers they too do weekly specials and deals on packs, so it ’s well worth a regular nose about. They have three locations, including Deansgrange and Rathfarnham at the Nutgrove Shopping Centre, but the most central spot is their Talbot Street shop.
Fresh fish is surprisingly difficult to get in Dublin, unless you have time for a trip to Howth, or catch your own. This great little store in Smithfield is one of the very few dedicated fresh fishmongers in the city, and certainly one of the best and most highly-rated.
They are primarily wholesalers (supplying such seafoody greats as SMS Luna) but have two retail outlets, on Bow Street and in Coolock. You can also keep an eye on their website for some great seafood recipes.
And in case you can’t make it into the city centre for your shopping, there is also Rathmines-based Absolutely Organic, a box-based delivery service which will bring organic produce from local farmers to your door.
What ’s more, they serve nationwide but delivery within Dublin is free. As well as cereals, dairy, even baby products, they have fruit and vegetable boxes, designed to give you a full range of produce for two adults (or a family with a larger box) for a week. Their meat is currently restricted to beef or chicken, unfortunately, but their online shop has a great range of produce.
