This Popular Lunchtime Market Is Shutting Down And It’s Pretty Devastating

Oh no. Looks like city workers will no longer be able to stretch out in the sun along the Grand Canal and gorge on some freshly made Bipimbap - the weekly food market at Mount St will be shutting down.

Waterways Ireland, who run the market, had applied to extend the length of its permit for its 16 food stalls every Friday, but The Irish Times reports permission has been denied.

The market stated in its application that it provided “important lunchtime recreational use” for the area, and guaranteed that all waste generated by the stalls would be disposed of off site.

It also said there was no anticipation that the market had any affect on the wildlife in the area.

Over 40 local residents, however, objected to the market, saying it was a collection of "fast food outlets" rather than a farmers market, and that cables o the ground were dangerous.

A small number of businesses in the area also complained that staff and customers of the stalls tried to use the toilet facilities of local businesses, and that the market was affecting their custom.

Waterways Ireland said it would not appeal the city council's decision.

Now where will we go for our outdoor lunch when the sun is shining? Devastated.
