The Group Behind The Stormzy Mural Did A Tongue-In-Cheek Protest Against Dublin City Council

Earlier this year, a pretty fantastic mural was painted in Smithfield, at Haymarket just off the main square, featuring a still from Stormzy's song Shut Up.

Stormzy himself even popped along before his Dublin gig, and seemed seriously impressed with the stellar work from Dublin artist collective group Subset.

They have some other vibrant art works around the city that genuinely brighten up the otherwise bare concrete blocks. But looks like planning laws might get in the way of that...

Subset received a warning letter from Dublin City Council threatening to remove the mural

Subset didn't apply for planning permission (“We’re a startup. We have very little money and in order for us to apply for planning permission… it would have been very costly and time-consuming,” a spokesperson told The Journal.)

The sad news? Subset don't have the funds to apply for retention to the council, so while both murals are a tongue-in-cheek visual protest for now, they will be removed by the group.

The Rathmines mural is being painted over tonight, and the Stormzy one will be gone on the 15th December.
