Port Tunnel Speed Cameras Going Live At Midnight

New cameras are set to be going live from midnight tonight in Dublin's Port Tunnel, with the intent of catching the many speeding drivers who break the speed limit through it. 

According to 98FM, the new technology installed detects those breaking the speed limit by tracking the average speed of motorists. 

This new system was announced a full year ago, back in June 2016.

It will see cameras placed at both the entrance and exit, with the capacity to calculate just what speed a four-wheeled vehicle is doing over a 4.5km distance, i.e. the length of the tunnel. 

Transport Minister, Shane Ross, said of the move: 

"Any initiative that has the potential to save lives and reduce serious injuries on our roads is to be welcomed."

The safety system will also be using a method counting how long it takes for motorists to drive the length of the tunnel. Any road-user found doing the 4.5km journey in less than 3 minutes and 30 seconds is breaking the 80 kilometre an hour limit and will receive a fine and penalty points. 

It's being reported that the camera positions cover both lanes so motorists won't be able to avoid them by switching lanes.
