Historic Dublin Hotel To Be Demolished And Rebuilt On Large Scale

If you've ever passed by the derelict Ormond Hotel along the quays then you'll recognise that this building has been lying empty for oh, the past ten years or so.

The building was bought in 2013 and planning permission was applied (and then denied) to demolish the Victorian hotel and replace it with a 170-bedroom, six-storey hotel.

But if you didn't know, this hotel has a pretty special background, and has links with James Joyce’s Ulysses, so it's considered important that the building be protected.

The new owners were determined however, and recently received permission for a five-storey, 121 room hotel which has gotten the go ahead.

We've mentioned before that some exciting changes were planned for this hotel, and now they're all about to kick off.

So what's in store for this new hotel makeover on the quays?

Architects Henry J Lyons who are in charge of the slick new design say that they will restore two adjacent, mostly unoccupied, historic buildings and incorporate them into the new hotel.

They'll even honour the James Joyce links by embedding extracts from the text in bronze lettering in the floor of the new hotel, which sounds like a classy touch.
