Top Government Adviser Says The Housing Crisis Is “Completely Normal”

Ireland doesn't have a major housing problem and what we see as a crisis is actually "completely normal", according to the government's top housing adviser. 

Speaking at the Urban Land Institute conference today, Conor Skehan said that some Irish people have exaggerated how serious the issue is. 

 "Every country in Europe has equivalent issues in terms of affordability, in terms of homelessness," he said. 

"One of the tragedies of living on an island is that we are people who indulge in insular thinking."

He added that Ireland's ratio of homeless people per head of population is one of the lowest in Europe, Fora.ie reports. 

"We forget that at our peril because it causes us to move away from things we succeed at doing so well, such as creating a country that has managed to survive one of the most extraordinary economic declines that has been experienced by any Western (nation)."
