Gardaí have revealed that they will be leaving 'bait bikes' around the city in order to catch bicycle thieves.
The new move will combat the rising problem in Dublin, with bike theft in the capital increasing an incredible 167% since the introduction of the bike to work scheme in 2009.
Having been trialled earlier in the year, the initiative involves fitting a GPS to a bike's rack, allowing the Gardaí to monitor its position.
Inspector Geraghty, a member of the Bike Security Campaign, told The Irish Times that while this project aims to catch bike thieves in the act, "it's more to develop intelligence as to where stolen bikes go".
The group also wants to alert cyclists to the need for more secure locks on their bikes, such as U-locks with the 'sold secure' accreditation as their main lock.
The initiative will be introduced before the end of the month.
