European Committee Finds Dublin Housing In Breach Of Tenants’ Human Rights

The human rights of tenants in council housing in Dublin are being breached, a European Committee has found. 

Raw sewage leaking into sinks and banks, no central heating, bad smells, mould and damp are just some of the problems faced by people living in the capital. 

Today the European Committee of Social Rights decided that local authorities here have failed to "ensure the right to housing of an adequate standard for a not insignificant number of families", the Irish Times reports. 

The ruling comes over three years after tenants from 20 council estates, including some in Limerick and Cork, submitted a joint complaint. 

As a member of the European Union, Ireland now has to take steps to address the problems found by the committee.
