The Irish Sun revealed on Thursday that a gang of thugs who were dressed as Gardaí raided a house in west Dublin.
The raiders held a businessman and his family hostage after gaining access by pretending to be members of An Garda Síochána.
The businessman from Brazil was with his wife and two kids as well as his three friends on Tuesday when five men called to his home.
Two of the men were dressed in fake Garda hi-vis jackets while the others had a Garda fleece and hat on.
They gained entry to the house in Castleknock Close and ordered the family and their friends - at gunpoint - to lie on the floor.
Gardai in Blanchardstown are currently examining CCTV footage in a bid to identify the raiders and they believe that one of the suspects could be a well known serial burglar from north Dublin.
A source said that the raiders tried a few houses in the area also but were unsuccessful.
In a similar event that took place in the south of the country at the start of the year, Gardaí warned people to be careful about who they let into their house.
“We would urge people to be very vigilant and we would ask their neighbours to be vigilant and not to admit anyone to their house until they are satisfied that they are who they say they are and to report any suspicious activity to their local Garda station.”
