Bill Clinton Arrives In Dublin Under Heavy Security For Martin McGuinness Funeral

Former US President Bill Clinton has touched down in Dublin this morning to attend the funeral of former deputy leader of Northern Ireland Martin McGuinness.

Shortly after 8am, Mr Clinton's flight, Delta DL044 from New York, landed in Dublin Airport where high levels of security were waiting.

Garda SUVs and motorcycles formed a guard around Bill Clinton's own security as he set off first for Dublin city, and then for Derry.

In a statement released by Bill Clinton upon hearing of McGuinness' death, he said that "when he decided to fight for peace, Martin was calm, courageous, and direct. And when he gave his word, that was as good as gold," adding that both himself and wife Hilary were "saddened" to hear the news.

Former President Barack Obama also paid tribute, stating that:

"In our own meetings, I was always struck by his good humor and persistent belief in a better future for the people of Northern Ireland. May Martin rest in the peace that he pursued in life, and may his example inspire others to follow a path of reconcilliation."

Bill Clinton has made more visits to Ireland than any other US president, due to his role in helping to unite Northern Ireland's community after the Troubles.

Martin McGuinness is remembered for his leadership qualities and instrumental role in bringing about peace in Northern Ireland.
