The closing of the Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market earlier this year caused Dubliners to shed more than a tear or two.
The historic market, located just between Capel Street and Smithfield, was shut down to allow for major refurbishment works.
Dublin City Council has revealed that the site will be redeveloped over the next two years and according to new plans, the Chancery Street yard will become the new entrance from the Luas line. Complete with outdoor seating space for the public.

The market building itself will house a café and restaurant along with retail stalls and cages similar to those to be found over in London’s Borough Market. The renovations aim to breathe new life into the place and bring a bit of character back to the venue.

A games area is being suggested as is improved disability access along with more parking and bicycle spaces
The plan, which is now being brought to public consultation, aims to conserve the architectural integrity of the building while still modernising the venue to bring it into the future. All very encouraging news.
