Dublin’s Historic Fruit And Vegetable Market Is Closing Its Doors Today After 127 Years

It’s the end of an era today as the Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market in the city centre closes its doors for the last time. The famous Victorian market on Mary’s Lane off Capel Street has been running since 1892 but is now being redeveloped after 127 years in business. This morning’s trading hours were to be the market’s last as Dublin City Council prepares to begin the major refurbishment works. https://www.instagram.com/p/B0S-JOQCdGM/ Wholesale traders at the market are reported to be receiving compensation totalling €5 million, with each trader’s share varying on their square footage as well as their turnover. Alternatively, they can opt for alternative temporary accommodation during the works, with the option to return to the newly redeveloped market next to Smithfield. Dublin City Council is said to be planning to redevelop the spa and keep half of it as a modern food market similar to Cork's English Market, with the other half earmarked for retail space. This could change in the near future though, as the tender process on what the market will actually become could take more than two years.
