Making dinner plans as a Type B person—or with a group of them—is like herding cats. Reservation? Didn’t happen. Someone’s late? Obviously. The group chat is half-deciding on a place as you’re already in the taxi. But Christmas is coming and begorrah you have somehow, against all odds managed to assemble disorganised avengers; now the only trouble is that literally everywhere is sardined to capacity.
Thank St Jude (the patron saint of hopeless cases; in case ya need a refresher on yizzer saints) that Dublin is still home to plenty of walk-in friendly well set gems.
13. Nomo Ramen, Charlotte Way
Nothing says, “We made no plans but still crushed it” like slurping ramen at Nomo. The creamy, seven-hour-simmered broth is worth any wait, and the intimate vibe means you can actually hear your mates as they try to recount why they were late. It’s warm, comforting, and entirely forgiving—just like your group chat. Plus their new truffle wagyu shoyu ramen is a thing of beauty.
If you’re the kind of group that decided on dinner five minutes ago but wants to pretend you planned it all week, La Maison is perfect. Their French bistro fare screams sophistication. But their walk-in policy says, “We know you forgot to book, but c’est la vie.” As long as there’s not too many of ye you should be grand rocking up decked out in your warmest garb. Grab a spot on their terrace. Order a round of olives. Then bask in the festive charm while trying to remember who forgot their wallet last time.
Bestseller is basically Type B in restaurant form: always ready to welcome you. This Dawson Street spot is most well known for its theatrical offerings and lunch fare but it also does wine and antipasti. Making it ideal for a last minute wine and girl diner. Their 100% no-reservations policy means you’re highly unlikely to be completely out of luck. Just show up, snag a table, and convince your mate to order a second bottle. You deserve it for finding a plan that worked.
10. Kimchi Hophouse, Parnell Street
Dublin's first Korean restaurant in a pub setting was ahead of its time. And if you’re categorically type B friend group is as messy as mine then you’ll know this is one of the last holdouts of the pitcher of beer deal. They do it all. Bibimbap, Bulgogi, and pitchers of ‘whatever you’re havin’ yourself’. Their effortlessly cool aura means even if you’re chancing your arm on Saturday December 21 you might just be able to finagle something. Be sure they buy you a pitcher as thanks for thinking of it. It’s the least ye deserve.
09. Cornucopia, Wicklow Street
For the vegans, vegetarians, or anyone who just wants to feel like they’re making a good life choice before diving into mulled wine, Cornucopia is the answer. This Wicklow Street institution offers hearty, plant-based meals that will convince even the carnivores in your group. Their “main course and two salads” deal is perfect for sharing.
08. Frank’s, Camden Street
Frank’s is basically a chronically Type B haven. They have wine, communal tables, and an à la carte menu that feels both curated and entirely spontaneous. They don’t take reservations. At all. So your group can confidently stroll in with all the nonchalance of people who don’t even own calendars. Share a bottle of natty juice and let the night take care of itself.
You came for tacos, but stayed for the Paloma—and maybe a round of spicy margs. Masa is a Type B’s dream: takes walkins, has excellent food, good tunes, and an enduring charm. Their two-taco portions are great for sharing, but honestly, who’s counting? You may have to queue, but that just gives you more time to scroll Instagram for the perfect order combo. Besides the tequila will warm ya afterwards.
06. Bar Pez, Kevin Street
If your group loves to pretend they’re on a Spanish holiday (or just came back from one), Bar Pez is a must. This seafood-focused spot keeps a third of their tables walk-in only. Perfect for those who “just got the idea to meet up an hour ago.” Their terroir-ists which means their wine list is organised by soil type. I'm sure they;'re someone in every group who will pretend to understand. And likely one who actually does. Either way there’s sold food, great wine, and some craic to be had even if you’re a Last-Minute-Larry.
05. 777, George’s Street
If your whole crew is neuro-spicy then you probably know this one. It’s a mainstay for the canonically last minute crew who wants a night that feels lively without the stress of planning: 777. Known for its Taco Tuesdays and margarita-filled brunches, this Mexican hotspot is walk-in only for groups under six. Show up, order some tacos, and let the energy carry you. Plus it’s right next to The George. So you know there’s somewhere to bop to nice and easy once those margaritas demand a little boogie.
04. Loose Canon, Drury Street
Nothing says “we’re winging it” like trying to get a table at Loose Cannon. We all know there are hardly any seats there. We also know if ye hover diligently enough you’ll be able to nab yourself some excellent cheese and wine for dinner. That’s basically everything you need for an evening of pure, unplanned Christmas bliss.
03. Lee’s Charming Noodles, Parnell Street
Your group’s never agreed on anything in their lives, but somehow Lee’s hand-pulled noodles make everyone happy. Whether it’s the braised beef soup or the Cantonese chow mein, the comfort of this Parnell Street favourite knows no bounds. Once you nab a seat you’ll be so instantly relaxed that it’ll make you forget you were ever stressed about dinner plans. It is right by the Luas so its an easy canter in and home.
02. Chimac, Aungier Street
Korean fried chicken, craft beer and of course the spicy frozé make Chimac the ultimate casual dining spot. Their twice-fried chicken is chefs kiss level perfection, and the poutine will impregnate you it’s that good. Food babies for everyone in the audience. Walk in, grab a seat, and thank yourself for being the kind of friends who lives life on the (deliciously crispy) edge.
So many options to choose from, only so much December left.
