Sometimes you want to get in, order your coffee and get out – and for those days, the world is your oyster when it comes to cafés.
But then there are other days, when the pace of life is a little bit slower and you wanna sit down, sip your coffee in (relative) peace and read your book, get a little work done or just watch the world go by. For those days, you probably don't wanna go to the busiest coffee shop on the block – so what are your options?
This Dublin 2 café is pretty much the only coffee shop in Dublin that's not an American chain and stays open super late (until 11pm Monday-Saturday, and 10pm Sundays), so you can cosy in with your capp and hang out for the evening. Bonus points for seriously comfy couches.
We're never sure where we stand on the décor in this quirky northside café – is it totally deranged, or just out-there enough? – but it's deceptively massive, and there are loads of nooks and crannies to hide yourself away in just long enough to finish those last few chapters.
The cafe formerly known as Baker's suffers a bit, being next to the always-popular Herbstreet, but it's perfect for chilling out and getting some work done: the décor is comfortingly undistracting and the coffee is seriously good.
Crucially: not at lunchtime, when the office crowd of Dublin 7 come in, in their droves – but the rest of the day at Urbanity is pretty soothing. Grab a coffee, roasted by the guys themselves in their on-site roastery, and sip it while scoffing one of their blondies. You won't regret it.
This is such an obvious choice, but to some it's a totally hidden gem – upstairs in the Central Hotel (home to The Exchequer) you'll find a super cosy bar serving all sorts of tipples, including tea and coffee. Free wifi makes it the perfect place to while away the afternoon while getting some work done.
This NCR café is a relatively new kid on the block and, for now anyway, things are pretty chill after lunch. Look, we know: it won't stay like this for long – call it the Brother Hubbard effect, but once everyone figures out just how good the coffee (and the cakes) are at TBB, it's game over for those of us who like some RnR with our roast.
Another cafe that has a serious rush at lunchtime, the rest of the day sees the Fumbally empty out and become, if not a zen oasis, a fairly relaxed location for tea, coffee and catching up. The presence of families means it might not be perfect for working, but chilling out and catching up with your book? Definitely.
