Style On The Streets: Dublin Does Print

We’ve teamed up with the stylish minds behind OPSH to track what Dubliners are wearing each week. This week, despite the rain, the city was all about summer prints. Whereas a few years ago it looked like Dublin was sponsored by Adidas and Canterbury, these days we’re leaving the safety of uniformity behind and we’re more happy to stand out with a pop of print ­ as these dapper Dubliners proved this week. Top Tips for Wearing Print

1. Whether you’re male or female, the number one rule when it comes to wearing print is the bigger the print, the bigger you’ll look. Thus smaller, intricate prints are a far more flattering option than large bold prints.

2. Avoid print around your problem areas and instead use them to focus attention on the body parts you’re more confident in showing off. If you’re bottom-heavy, go for a darker block colour on your bottom half and a printed top so that all attention is instantly drawn to your upper half. Similarly, if you carry your weight on top, try a pair of this season’s printed shorts or tapered trousers but keep the look paired back with a neutral top)

3. Another way to stop prints adding unnecessary width to your frame is to add block colour panels to your upper frame in the form of a jacket. This will instantly trick the eye inward towards the print and instantly elongate your frame.

4. If you’re feeling brave and want to try an on-trend print clash then ensure you mismatch your prints within a similar colour palette. Feel free to contrast florals with geometric prints, or polkadots with stripes. Prints are supposed to be playful, so have fun with them.

5. If you do decide to clash two prints then know your limits. Stick to a maximum of two different prints then keep the rest of your look muted as clashing too many prints at once looks excessive.

6. To avoid looking overdone if you do try printed separates, stick to tailored styles as tapered trousers, blazers and even structured shirts look neater than flowing fabrics.

7. If you want to add a pop of print to lift a neutral outfit then try some patterned accessories. The high street is full of printed footwear, backpacks, sunglasses, umbrellas and hats for you to choose from but again, if you’re new to the trend, stick to a maximum of two clashing prints within a similar colour palette.
