We may usually associate metallics with the Christmas party season, but all shades of shimmer were heavily represented across the spring summer catwalks this year, and it’s one of the season’s hottest trends for both men and women.

While you may not be brave enough to rock a full-length gold lamé jumpsuit, you can still give a nod to the trend with some blinging accessories, as the people of Dublin proved this week. The Golden Rules For Wearing Metallics

1. The Right Bling For Your Skin

Finding out which metal suits you best has nothing to do with your hair colour, gender, age or eye colour; ultimately, it comes down to your skin tone. Your skin tone isn’t about being pale or tanned - it refers to the underlying shade of pink, yellow or blue tones in your skin.

To find out whether you have cool or warm colouring, hold your wrist palm-face up in natural light. Green veins indicate a warm yellow-based skin tone, while purple/blue veins mean you have a rosy pink or blue cool skin tone.

Another way to figure out your skin tone is to test silver and gold bracelets across your wrist palm-side up. Gold will highlight the natural yellow hue in warm skin tones, while silver will complement blue-hued skin tones.

2. One Metallic Flatters All

The most universally flattering metallic for both warm and cool skin tones is rose gold. This on-trend metallic has a gold base, so highlights the yellow in warmer skin tones, but as it is primarily pink, it complements cooler pink-based skin tones, too.

3. Know The One That’s One Too Many

Don’t get too excited once you’ve identified the metallic that suits you best and layer on the bling. Follow Coco Chanel’s advice and, before leaving the house, look in the mirror and take off one accessory.
