Traffic May Be At A Standstill In The City Centre Today As 6,000 Motorists Are Expected To Protest

A protest is taking place in Dublin today against soaring insurance prices, and thousands are expected to turn up for it.

Organised by a group called Ireland Underground, up to 6,000 cars are expected for the rally at Merrion Square this afternoon.

The massive protest was prompted by an upsurge in insurance premiums of 67% in the last three years; protesters are demanding changes to legislation to curb fraudulent pay-outs.

Kerry travel agent and organiser of the rally, Kian Griffin, said,

We are expecting around 6,000 cars to travel to the protest. That could mean between 12,000 and 15,000 people turn up as many cars will be full.

The protest begins at 2pm in Merrion Square this afternoon.
