Major Changes Could Be On The Way To Luas Services

Transport Minister Shane Ross will reportedly ask the Cabinet to increase the length of Luas trams from 43m to 55m in a bid to decrease congestion.

The Herald reports that Ross plans to spend nearly €100m enhancing capacity between 2018 and 2022. However, the extension of the trams would only take place on the green line.

Currently, the green line is 16.5km in length and has 22 Stops. If Minister Ross' wish is granted, eight new trams will be purchased and a number of platforms will also be extended.

The move comes ahead of the official launch of the Luas Cross City project, which links the Green and Red lines, on December 9. The two lines carried 34.2 million passengers last year but that figure is expected to rise once the two lines are linked up.
