Okay, I’ll admit it... September was really not the best month for film-goers.
Thankfully however, the box office roars back into life this weekend with a stellar bunch of new releases in art-houses and multiplexes alike.

This housing crisis drama stars ex-Spider Man Andrew Garfield as Dennis Nash, forced out of his home due to unpaid debts, and winding up working for real estate shark Dennis Carver, played by eternal scary man Michael Shannon.
99 Homes played well at US festivals in late 2014, and screened at JDIFF earlier this year. The fact that it’s receiving such a low-key release is over here is disappointing, as it is a tense, brilliantly acted morality play that deserves to be seen by the widest audience possible.
Seek it out this weekend.

The eagerly awaited Scottish film finally arrives this weekend, and judging from the atmospheric trailers and gushing reviews, it looks unlikely to disappoint.
Directed by Snowtown’s Justin Kerzel, Fassbender & Cotillard play unhappy families as Mr & Mrs Macbeth, with support from a stacked cast including Jack Reynor, Paddy Considine & Sean Harris.
Joining the ranks of classic adaptations from Orson Welles and Roman Polanski, with 2015’s Macbeth, the Bard’s most accessible play is adapted to the screen in a most visceral way.

Another timely reminder of the racial injustices taking place in the US on a daily basis, Marc Silver’s harrowing doc looks to the events of November 23rd, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Just 3½ minutes after pulling up to a gas station, African-American teenager Jordan David was shot 10 times by 45 year old caucasian Michael Dunn.
This Participant Media/HBO documentary focuses on the court proceedings that followed, with Dunn claiming he acted in self-defence. Don’t just google it.
