For anyone who doesn’t know by now, Halloween was first celebrated in Ireland around a thousand years ago.
Which is why this 1900s Halloween experience is the perfect way to honour the spooky season.
A Taste of Ireland event, it will take place today from 1pm to 3:30pm.
Attendees will get to learn all about how our ancestors honoured the big day – their traditions, superstitions, beliefs.
Starting off with a brief history talk about the origins of Halloween, you’ll flashback to 500BC when the festival first began before jumping forward again to the 1900s.
You’ll be privy to all the insider information such as where the festival name came from, how to bob for apples and maybe even pick up some tips on how to find your future husband and wife. The more you know.
And of course, there will be food to follow. Keeping with the theme, the menu will be Halloween themed offering up culinary delights like Samhain stew, colcannon (my Dad’s absolute favourite), pan-fried boxty pancakes (my absolute favourite) and some seasonal roasted root veg to make sure you get one of your five a day.

Perhaps the best bit though? The “Barnbrack fortune teller”. Tell me more…
Guests will discover the meaning behind the symbols hidden within a traditional barnbrack and what relevance they have to the future. Very mysterious indeed.
