Dublin City Council has approved the installation of a large bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Irish Times reports that the decision was made after Indian Ambassador Sandeep Kumar offered the bust as a gift to mark 150 years since the independence and civil rights leader's birth.
Dublin City Council confirmed that it had 'approved in principle the acceptance of the gift of the bronze bust subject to identification of a suitable location for the gift.'
Speaking to the publication, Mr. Kumar suggested that he would 'like to see the bust placed in a public park such as the National Botanic Gardens, the Phoenix Park, Merrion Square or St Stephen’s Green.'
The bust is expected to be about 'four feet wide and sit on a stone pedestal'. Indian sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, who has produced over 50 statues throughout a 40-year career, has been earmarked to create the work.
