Thinking about getting to the cinema more? If so, this short list might be of interest to you.
We've had a bit of a nose around local cinema listings for the next few weeks and found a few vintage offerings that are really worth seeing on the big screen, especially if you've never seen them before.
Here are our cinematic offerings...
Where: Happenings, Sandymount Green
When: 7pm, Saturday, April 30
Plot: Set in northeastern England during the coal miners' strike of '84 and '85, Billy Elliot follows the life of its 11-year-old titular character, an aspiring dancer facing bullying for trying to follow his ballet dreams.
Our thoughts: This one will get ya right in the feels.
Where: Light House Cinema
When: 8pm, Saturday, May 7
Plot: Set in 1980s Miami, Tony Montana (Al Pacino) is fresh off the boat from Cuba and eager to get money, power, and women. To get there, he takes the bloodiest route the top of the city's drug dealing food chain...
Our thoughts: One of Pacino's greatest performances and one of the greatest gangster flicks ever, shown on the big screen? It's a no-brainer.
Where: The Sugar Club
When: Monday, April 25, 8pm
Plot: Set about 100 years in the future, a deep space mining vessel is on its return voyage to Earth when it's called to a nearby planet by a distress beacon. Once landed, they find no signs of human life, but do find a mysterious alien creature that makes its way onto the ship. Cue one of the most iconic horror scenes of all time.
Our thoughts: If you're in the mood for some classic horror from the same visionary director who created Gladiator, this is for you.
Where: The IFI
When: 5.30pm Saturday/Sunday, May 7/8; 8.20pm, Tuesday, May 10
Plot: World War 2 veteran Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is struggling to readjust to post-war society when he meets a charismatic Renaissance man named Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Dodd heads a movement known as 'The Cause' and Quell agrees to join him, little realising just what this organisation is...
Our thoughts: Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (who made such incredible films as Magnolia, Boogie Nights, and There Will Be Blood), and starring heavyweights like Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams, this one's for true cinephiles.
